After an intense competition, the German team finished the relay in first place in 1h18m42s, securing the gold medal and the title of university world champion. The team consisted of athletes: Jannik Schaufler, Céline Kaiser, Wilhelm Hirsch and Bianca Bogen. The mixed team relay competition of the World University Championship Triathlon started at 14:00 (CET), at Pajuçara Beach, in Maceió. Brazil and Switzerland completed the podium, in second and third place, respectively.
The German team showed that they were the favorites from the start, maintaining good positions and leading to the finish line. Céline Kaiser was the second athlete to compete for the country, the day after winning the gold medal in the women’s singles. “It’s so special for me to be here, and I didn’t expect to win a medal, and we are three german girls and I wasn’t sure if I have a space in the relay today, but I’m very happy to be here, I really like the venue, and it’s my first time in Brazil”.
Virgílio de Castilho, CEO of the Brazilian Confederation of Triathlon (CBTri) celebrates the holding of the World University Championship: “it is a satisfaction, a huge honor, even more in a place as beautiful as Maceió”. He also looks back on the journey so far. “In 2014 we had World University Championship in Brasília, and today, 8 years later, we were able to bring it back to Brazil, and this is very important for the sport, in addition to increasingly praising the work we are developing”, he concludes.
